The Challenge
Arabam.com is a popular online marketplace based in Turkey that primarily focuses on the automotive industry. It provides a range of services and features for customers who are interested in buying, selling, or researching vehicles, and face a critical challenge with its existing SQL Server infrastructure. They were running a 3-node SQL Server 2016 cluster on Windows Server 2016 for their mission-critical databases
Â
Due to the existing SQL Server 2016 and Windows Server 2016 setup nearing the end of its support lifecycle, posing potential security and performance risks, Arabam.com planned and wanted to upgrade to SQL Server 2019 Always On running on Windows Server 2019.
While the SQL Server 2016 cluster provided some level of high availability, Arabam.com desired an even more robust solution to minimize downtime and data loss.
Arabam.com’s database workloads were growing, requiring better scalability and performance to meet user expectations.
What did
Deka Technology do?
Deka Technology planned and executed the upgrade to SQL Server 2022 Always On on Windows Server 2019. Here’s how we did it:
- Assessment and Planning: The first step was to thoroughly assess their existing environment. This included analyzing the database workloads, dependencies, and potential compatibility issues. A detailed upgrade plan was developed to minimize downtime.
- Hardware Upgrade: Decided to upgrade the server hardware to take full advantage of the capabilities offered by Windows Server 2019 and SQL Server 2019. This included faster processors, more RAM, and solid-state drives.
- Installation and Configuration: Windows Server 2019 was installed on the new hardware and the servers as a 3-node cluster were configured. SQL Server 2019 was then installed, and the Always On availability group was set up, ensuring synchronous data replication between nodes.
- Data Migration: Various migration techniques, including database backup and restore, and SQL Server Log Shipping were used to move data from SQL Server 2019 to SQL Server 2019. The migration process was carefully planned and executed to minimize downtime and data loss.
- Testing and Validation: Extensive testing was conducted to ensure that the new environment met performance and availability requirements. Failover testing and disaster recovery drills were performed to validate the Always On setup.
The Results
- Enhanced Availability: The 3-node Always On cluster improved availability and reduced data loss risk during server failures.
- Improved Performance: Hardware upgrades and SQL Server 2019 enhancements led to faster query response times, handling increased workloads.
- Long-term Support: Arabam.com now enjoys ongoing support and security updates on their chosen platform
- Business Continuity: Robust disaster recovery capabilities instilled confidence in maintaining business operations during disasters.
- Enhanced Data Security: The Always On cluster increased data security while ensuring continuous availability, bolstering customer trust.
